Background of the Study

With the rising prevalence of diet-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, dietary adherence has become a major concern in public health. Online food tracking applications have emerged as a tool to support individuals in monitoring their dietary intake, managing calorie consumption, and making informed food choices. These applications provide users with features such as food logging, calorie counting, meal planning, and progress tracking. In Gombe State, where dietary-related health issues are on the rise, the use of digital solutions such as food tracking applications could play a crucial role in improving nutritional outcomes.

The effectiveness of food tracking applications in enhancing dietary adherence has been widely studied in developed countries, with evidence suggesting positive impacts on weight management and nutritional behavior. However, their effectiveness in low-resource settings like Gombe State, where digital adoption varies, remains unclear. Factors such as user engagement, accessibility, digital literacy, and the accuracy of food databases can influence the success of these applications in improving dietary adherence. This study seeks to appraise the role of online food tracking applications in influencing dietary habits in Gombe State, evaluating their effectiveness, adoption challenges, and user perceptions.

Statement of the Problem

Despite increasing awareness of the importance of proper nutrition, dietary adherence remains a significant challenge in Gombe State. Many individuals struggle with maintaining a balanced diet due to lack of knowledge, poor meal planning, and limited access to nutritional guidance. Traditional dietary counseling methods have limitations in reach and consistency, making it difficult for individuals to sustain healthy eating patterns. Online food tracking applications offer a promising solution by providing real-time feedback, meal recommendations, and progress tracking. However, their impact on dietary adherence in Gombe State has not been sufficiently evaluated.

Several challenges may hinder the effectiveness of these applications, including low digital literacy, limited internet access, cultural food preferences, and the reliability of food databases for Nigerian cuisine. Without empirical data on their adoption and effectiveness, the role of food tracking applications in addressing dietary challenges remains uncertain. This study aims to provide insights into the usage and impact of online food tracking applications in promoting dietary adherence in Gombe State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the adoption and usage patterns of online food tracking applications in Gombe State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of food tracking applications in promoting dietary adherence among users.
  3. To identify the challenges and limitations of using food tracking applications in Gombe State.

Research Questions

  1. How frequently are online food tracking applications used by residents of Gombe State?
  2. To what extent do online food tracking applications influence dietary adherence in Gombe State?
  3. What challenges hinder the adoption and effectiveness of food tracking applications in Gombe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The use of food tracking applications significantly improves dietary adherence in Gombe State.
  2. Socioeconomic factors influence the adoption and effectiveness of food tracking applications.
  3. Cultural food preferences and limited digital literacy hinder the widespread use of food tracking applications.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the evaluation of online food tracking applications in Gombe State, examining their usage, effectiveness, and associated challenges. It will primarily assess applications used for meal tracking, calorie counting, and dietary planning. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data, the digital divide affecting access to technology, and the availability of comprehensive food databases that cater to Nigerian dietary habits.

Definitions of Terms

  • Dietary Adherence: The extent to which individuals follow recommended dietary guidelines or nutrition plans.
  • Calorie Counting: The process of tracking energy intake from food consumption to manage diet and weight.
